Far Infrared Spectroscopy of Star-forming Galaxies: Expectations for the Herschel Space Observatory

چکیده

ISO has enabled far-infrared spectroscopy of a variety of galaxies. Using the [CII] (158μm) and [OI](63μm) lines, we can characterize the physical conditions in the star-forming ISM. These observations also form the basis of our expectations for what the Herschel Space Observatory will observe for high redshift galaxies. While [CII] is suppressed in ULIRGs and normal galaxies with high dust temperatures, it is stronger than expected in metal poor galaxies by factors of a few. Young galaxies at high redshifts might be expected to be both metal poor and actively star-forming, leading to contrary expectations for the [CII] line strength. The best prediction for [CII] detection is derived by using the observed proportionality between [CII] and mid-IR emission from PAHs. Using the observed [CII]/7 μm ratio and number counts from ISO deep surveys we predict that HSO will be able to detect 100 sources/square-degree in the [CII] line.

An infrared–radio simulation of the extragalactic sky: from the Square Kilometer Array to Herschel

To exploit synergies between the Herschel Space Observatory and next generation radio facilities, we have extended the semi-empirical extragalactic radio continuum simulation of Wilman et al. to the midand far-infrared. Here we describe the assignment of infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to the star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei, using Spitzer 24, 70 and 160μm and SCUB...

Herschel observations of far-infrared cooling lines in intermediate redshift (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies

We report the first results from a spectroscopic survey of the [C ii] 158 μm line from a sample of intermediate redshift (0.2 < z < 0.8) (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies, (U)LIRGs (LIR > 10 11.5 L⊙), using the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver–Fourier Transform Spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This is the first survey of [C ii] emission, an important tracer of sta...

Mid- to far-infrared properties of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei⋆⋆⋆

We study the midto far-IR properties of a 24 μm-selected flux-limited sample (S 24 > 5 mJy) of 154 intermediate redshift (〈z〉 ∼ 0.15), infrared luminous galaxies, drawn from the 5 Milli-Jansky Unbiased Spitzer Extragalactic Survey. By combining existing mid-IR spectroscopy and new Herschel SPIRE submm photometry from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey, we derived robust total infrar...

Confirming a population of hot-dust dominated, star-forming, ultraluminous galaxies at high redshift

We identify eight z > 1 radio sources undetected at 850 μm but robustly detected at 70 μm, confirming that they represent ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with hotter dust temperatures (〈T d〉 = 52 ± 10 K) than submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at similar luminosities and redshifts. These galaxies share many properties with SMGs: ultraviolet spectra consistent with starbursts, high stellar m...

A Herschel view of the far-infrared properties of submillimetre galaxies⋆⋆⋆

We study a sample of 61 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected from ground-based surveys, with known spectroscopic redshifts and observed with the Herschel Space Observatory as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) guaranteed time key programmes. Our study makes use of the broad far-infrared and submillimetre wavelength coverage (1...
